The Penalty Structure Is Brutal — Don’t Ignore It
Miss the 31 January deadline by a single day and HMRC issues an automatic £100 fine — no warnings, no excuses accepted.
After 3 months late: £10 per day penalty (up to 90 days = £900 extra).
After 6 months late: 5% of tax owed or £300, whichever is greater.
After 12 months late: Another 5% or £300 — plus potential investigation.
Not a single MHC & Co client has ever missed a deadline. Don’t be the first.

Do I need to file if I’m employed via PAYE?
Usually not — most PAYE employees don’t need to file. But you will need one if you earn over £100,000, have untaxed income (rental, freelance, dividends), or HMRC has written to you to request one. Unsure? We offer a free check — just get in touch.
What documents will I need to provide?
Most returns need: your P60 or P45, self-employment income & expense records, bank statements, rental income details, investment income, and any pension or Gift Aid contributions. We’ll send you a tailored checklist once you engage us.
How quickly can you complete my return?
Once we have all your documents, most returns are completed within 48 working hours. More complex returns (multiple income sources, CGT, foreign income) typically take 3–5 working days. We can fast-track close to the January deadline.
Can you help if I’ve missed previous years?
Yes — this is common and very fixable. We regularly prepare returns for multiple prior tax years, liaise with HMRC, and in many cases successfully reduce or waive the automatic penalties where there’s a reasonable excuse.
Can you claim a CIS tax refund for me?
Absolutely. Most CIS subcontractors are overtaxed at source at 20% and are owed a refund. We specialise in CIS refund claims and ensure you recover every penny owed quickly and correctly.
Do I need to be based in Bristol?
Not at all — we serve clients across the whole of the UK. Everything is handled online via our secure portal. You’ll never need to visit our Bristol office, though you’re always welcome to.
What happens if HMRC queries my return?
We deal with HMRC directly on your behalf as your authorised agent. If your return is ever queried or investigated, we represent you throughout the process. We’ve never had a client penalised for an error in a return we prepared.
